Photographing children

Children are a very popular subject for photographers. New born babies especially, and its nice to record the first years of the children as they grow. Early childhood events like the first time they walk, pre-school, primary, sports and so on are great reasons for taking pictures of our kids.

When you’re around young children always keep your camera close at hand. Children create some magical moments and the results are a lovely collection of candid images.

Where possible get down on the same level as the kids. Photographs are much more interesting if you get more than just the tops of the heads.

Work quickly and don’t crowd them. You can get some amazing shots when the children are playing with something. Take lots of pictures, with a digital camera it doesn’t matter. With children things happen quickly and the more you take the better your chances of getting a spectacular moment.

Use the flash when your shooting outside. It will help to fill in any shadows from the sunlight.

When you’re taking photos of a special occasion it can be hard to get young children to cooperate they can be easily distracted and become bored very quickly. Give the child something to focus on like a toy and with young babies get the mother to stand beside you. Babies often get a beautiful wide eyed expression when they are smiling at mum. If you don’t want to have the toy in the picture, hold it in your hand and draw the child’s attention away from the camera.

Minimise the problem of red-eye by distracting the child from looking at the camera directly.

Taking the camera to the beach

The summer is on its way and everyone is looking forward to getting back to the beach. This is a great activity for us but can be quite hazardous for delicate electronic equipment like digital cameras! Extra care should be taken to ensure that your memories of the day are not the cost of replacing your camera.

It’s all a matter of common sense really. Keep your camera and other gear protected when your not using it. Keeping it in a sealed plastic bag to keep out any sand or water and don’t leave it out in the direct sunlight. Remember to wipe the camera lens occasionally to remove salt spray residue, you will need to keep a soft clean cloth handy for this as the beach towels will invariably be full of sand and grit the moment you settle yourselves down. Taking photos on your holiday

Holiday photographs are always a great way to look back and remember the fun adventures you had with your family or friends. I often flick through the pages of my photo books and always get a giggle at the candid shots of the kids doing things they wouldn’t ordinarily get to do. Like snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef on a recent family vacation to escape the winter chills.

I find photos are more enjoyable if they include some reference to the holiday or the location. My kids spent a lot of time in the swimming pool, of which we have several photographs, but they are no different to the photos of the kids in the pool from the last holiday or the one before that. The kids are just older. Read all »

Is it possible to save a customized layout?

“I have created a layout for my book no 1 from the layout options at the bottom of the screen.  I would  like book no 2 to follow a similar pattern?  Can I save the layout of book no 1?

You can create your own layouts within a project and save them to be reused within that project file. At this time it is not possible to copy custom layouts between project files however this may change in a future release. This is definitely the preferred development direction.
